Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Heckl

Professor Heckl is a leading European and world expert in the field of nanotechnology. A student of the Nobel Prize winner, Gerd Binnig, he lives in Munich, where he teaches at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU). He has been professor of experimental physics at that university since 1993. He became the director of Germany’s biggest science museum, the Deutsches Museum in Munich, in 2004.

Professor Heckl’s outstanding status in the field of nanotechnology is confirmed by more than 150 academic publications – among other things on high-resolution scanning probe microscopy and the nanosciences – a large number of lectures, patents in the fields of optics and nanotechnology, as well as by a number of awards, including the Communicator Prize 2002 awarded by the Stifterverband für die Wirtschaft, a German economic foundation.

For more than ten years, Wolfgang Heckl has committed himself to imparting his research results to the public at large. With his interdisciplinary research, Prof. Heckl is forging links between the nano-sciences and the geo-sciences, biology and physics.

In his attempts to promote a better understanding of science, Prof. Heckl uses cutting edge presentation techniques and is always well received by people of all ages and from all sections of the population. He presents in English or German.
