Lars Abromeit
Expedition reporter, explorer, science journalist
Lars Abromeit is an explorer and biologist, science journalist, book and film author - and an expert on foreign worlds: Together with research and environmental protection teams, he explores the extreme regions of the earth to unravel the mysteries of our time. His borderline experiences have taken him from a 7000 metre peak in the Himalayas down to the deep sea, 1000 metres beneath the waves, from the Antarctic to the reefs and rainforests of the tropics and into the abysses of huge cave systems.
In his reports for GEO magazine, in non-fiction books, documentary films and as a keynote speaker, he reports on the adventures, risks and hardships that these modern-day voyages of discovery entail. He explains what we can learn from expeditions for our everyday lives. And why the effort is worth it - for all of us.
Abromeit has been responsible for the ‘Adventure and Expeditions’ section of the GEO editorial team since 2006. He has received numerous awards for his stories about the power of curiosity and our responsibility to preserve nature, including the Henri Nannen Prize and the CNN Journalist of the Year Award.
In 2023, Abromeit summarised his ten best expedition reports in the book ‘Bis an den Rand der Welt’. He also regularly reports on his experiences in public lectures with spectacular photos from the world's best photographers who accompany him on his expeditions on all continents and seas of the world. On television, he has appeared as a guest on the red sofa of the NDR programme ‘DAS!’, on ‘stern tv’ and twice on ‘Markus Lanz’.
The ‘astronaut for space on earth’ (Lanz on Abromeit) is a member of the international ‘The Explorers Club’ based in New York and has been an ambassador for the German Committee for the UN Ocean Decade since 2024. He also supports the ‘GEO protects the rainforest’ association on a voluntary basis as a project advisor. He and his family have their base camp in Hamburg. However, he can often be found climbing routes in the Alps or surfing and diving by the sea with his family or friends.
Abromeit studied biology and law in Freiburg i. Br., Sydney, Buenos Aires and Göttingen from 1994 to 2000, attended the Henri Nannen School of Journalism (Hamburg) from 2000 to 2002 and the International Film School Cologne (ifs - Masterclass Non-Fiction) from 2017 to 2018.
His lecture languages are German and English.
